M696 Ride Height
I'm sure I've seen it on here before but can't find it. I know some M696 owners have replaced the rear suspension clevis with the one from the M796 to give more ride height. Given the amount it raises the rear have those that have done it raised the front as well by dropping the forks through? If not how much has it quickened the steering?

Hi,
The 796 forks as a whole have a different part number to the 696 forks but all the components are identical when I checked them all individually. The 796 does run a taller profile front tyre which will raise the front, so you might find the fork position is actually similar on the 696 and 796 and the tyre profile is the difference you need to replicate to keep your geometry right. When I changed to 1098 forks and went to an 1100 clevis I took a measurement front and rear on the Monster stock and again after changing the clevis and then moved the forks in the yolks to match the increase in the rear keeping the head angle the same. I always thought that the 696 had shorter forks (could be wrong) to match the lower back end.
To answer your question it will quicken the steering but I have no idea by how much as I've not yet even seen a new shape Monster up close to give even an educated guess. |

Ah, Thanks
Now I remember Big Oz.....you are one of the ones that have done it. Thanks for the info. I had a feeling it was a long way to go up without altering the forks. Thanks both..

The outer tube and complete damper element which extends from the top cap all the way to the bottom of the fork leg are the same which makes it quite likely the forks are the same overall length. 120/60ZR17 55W BW 3.5 582 mm 120/70ZR17 58W BW 3.5 600 mm The tyres look like they will make about 9mm difference. Also the 796 forks are dropped in the yokes. 696 796 With a wheelbase of 1450mm being out by 5mm will give a change in head angle of 0.2 degrees what that means in handling someone more knowledgeable than me will have to answer.
