I've seen small bar end type mirrors mounted on Monster frames instead of the handlebars, not tried it though.

I don't have mirrors on any of my bikes, not a problem for the MOT and it does force you to use your head. I would never trust a mirror only before making a manoeuvre anyway and I don't tend to do much motorway riding when a mirror would be of more use to spot those cars coming up the outside at 3 figure speeds.
