Its an old chestnut and there are those who disagree but I'm going to repeat it anyway on a take it or leave it basis .......
If you grind off the locating pins and rely on tightening up the clamping grip by wrapping the bars with tape you impose a wedging action on the switchgear halves when they are tightened up and, because the castings are a zinc rich aluminium die casting alloy which is inherently brittle, and because the castings themselves are pretty thin, you risk cracking them.
Obviously I don't have personal experience of this because I don't grind my pins off but I've bought secondhand switchgear that has been damaged in this way.
Then again there are those who claim its ok to do and seem to get away with it.
I guess it depends on how much tape you use.
Anyway there it is, for what its worth.

I do accept though .... its a right royal pain to get the holes drilled in exactly the right spot first time around, so I can see the temptation to de-pin.
