Fit some smaller feet? Seriously though are you letting the lever return fully and taking your foot out of the way, so it gets a full throw at the pawl? Could be a worn detent spring, maybe? I've not heard of this problem before in relation to Ducati before, usually most have issues finding neutral (which is usually a drive train or clutch issue).

I thought I would have issues riding my 748 with motocross style boots (which are very chunky toe capped boots) but it was fine and the footpegs and levers on those are dinky to say the least, no problems with the monster either but more regular sized pegs/levers there.
