I was chatting to a neighbour who happens to be a retired engineer who worked for Cummins (part of Caterpillar I believe) in Peterborough. He is also an advanced riding instructor.

I mentioned the change in the thread size as mentioned earlier. His view was that Ducati may have had problems with vibration loosening the sprocket nuts and so changed to a finer thread which apparently is a tried and tested solution.

Regarding thread sizes, there have been a few occasions when I have been unsure of the sizes when removing a bolt or nut so I decided to invest in one of these:
