Just relaying what I have read/heard elsewhere. CV (Mikuni) carbs need still air to work well and they also need an unobstructed bell mouth as pressure fluctuations impact on the diaphragm and hence the mid range fuelling. Hence the need for the air box and why pod filters with the obstruction of the end cap do not necessarily provide any performance advantage for Mikuni CV carburetors.
I have read also elsewhere that most pod filters are not actually very good at filtering the air, they pass more air when clean because the gaps between the mesh are much bigger so harmful stuff is more likely to get through them. Google "effectiveness of different types of air filters".
Flat slides with no diaphragms do not suffer the same issues around calmness of the air entering them, though there may still be performance downsides from pod filters by virtue of the restriction caused by the end cap of the pod filter.
Foam filters are what I shall be using as the air box on my M900 is history, about the same filtration capability without the restrictive end cap. (Demon Tweeks)
