If you hear a whirring from under the seat, that will be the exhaust valve cycling. The fuel pump will be heard from within the tank itself. Open the fuel cap and put your ear to the tank as you turn the ignition on and you should be able to hear the pump priming.
I can't find any error messages specific to the fuel pump, but I'd have thought, if it failed, you'd see a generic ECU error displayed.
