I wonder how long it is going to still be okay to refer to master and slave, even in mechanical terms? It crops up in woodwork too.

It makes you realise how naturally we use terminology from darker days without even thinking of it. and how our language is saturated with such.
It's very ironic that when slavery was abolished in the UK, the biggest slave owners were compensated for their "loss" by the government and ploughed their gains into the industrial revolution taking the language and values with them.

I'm not sure what alternative names there are?

Interesting how language is moulded as time passes.. Spot the two agricultural references in this very post.
