it’s more likely to be a dodgy aerial or connector. ecu will tend to work or not.
you don’t have an ‘immo box’ that’s a peculiarity of early s4 (& st4), antony @avanti will have told you to check for it if he thought you said s4, as it’s the weak link on those models.
the good news is, he’ll only charge return postage if he doesn’t find a fault.
he can probably disable the immobiliser in a 59m if you ask him to.

sorry to state the obvious but... i assume you’ve tried other keys?

ron, my 59m equipped m1000 will turn but not fire, if the immobiliser kicks in (ignition on for 30+ seconds without starting)
