The plate part of the return Spring catches on central extension from the pivot bolt head. That provides a fulcrum so that the spring tension flips the stand up when the weight is taken off it.
I find those a bigger liability than riding off with the stand down, but it can easily be modified by cutting and grinding the face of the pivot bolt head so that the return spring slides over it and Spring tension pulls the stand forward instead once the Spring goes over centre.
