If it's an early one and you fit the later sticker with the higher lines, then just treat the bottom edge of the decal as the minimum and the maximum mark will be about in line with the bottom of the word Max.
What you wouldn't want to do is to top up an early bike to the later Max line as that would be over-filled.

I must have got lucky then! Mine will be going on a 1993 M900. The sticky bit on the back is rubbish though, it doesn't stick at all to my engine as there's a slight curve to the panel. I will have to investigate some stronger adhesives!
I can take a scan if anyone needs a good reference image.
