I know what you mean about the frame colour but I actually thought it looked pretty good, especially as Darkness has already said there were so many colour variations in the early days- perhaps it was just a simple case of who mixed the paint on any particular day?

I know the petrol tanks up until around '99 (TGP take-over time?) were sprayed by hand (they actually make a point of saying that in the sales brochure I have from '97) so perhaps the frames were too?

I'm sure considering the detail you're going to that you're already over it, but don't forget to take lots of measurements from various reference points to get the tank decals in the right place and at the correct angle.

I've seen a lot of re-sprayed tanks with odd looking decals once the tank is back on the bike .
