I was attached to 9 Independent Sq RE, in the 70s for a short tour, i am 5ft 6", and all the lads in the unit were a minimum 5ft 10" if i remember correctly.
I got some stick on deployment, but soon fitted in brilliant unit. i was with them when the riots were happening in Long Kesh, and they were sent in, i was in the air above the action in a Puma with the L42A1 (T) and dropping gas canisters into the rioters that was a scary situation for a little lad from a mining family
