The speedo on the '97 is mechanical, the moisture issue is a problem for the electronic ones and LCD ones on the later injection bikes, but I don't think it will stop a mechanical one from working.
If the odo still works its getting drive from the wheel so it will be a problem inside the clock itself I would think.
