Excellent, thanks for the advice!!

I think for now I'll just get some rings in to try and get the bike running. I've literally had it apart more times than I've actually rode it so far, so I just want it working to see what else might need throwing at it. My plan had been to use it this summer while it's a bit rough and ready, then put a bit of money into it next year and take it apart, tidy everything up and go over the mechanical side. Unfortunately I didn't even get as far as using it!!

So next year I'll invest the time and effort into doing everything properly and plan to have it apart for a while. Right now it's like having a new toy that you just can't play with!!
