Thanks for all the replies & advice. more or less what I had in mind, clean & check all the connections, WD40 & fingers crossed that it's not a faulty speedo.
I'll update once I've had a chance to investigate.
On a similar vein, I unplugged both the cooling fans when I removed the radiator recently, now neither of them come on, I had the temperature right up to 120, seems unlikely that they should both fail, could I have affected the sensor just by unplugging them?
