I have stock of the Button head screws I make the Instrument screws from, which are M8 x 50, so I'll have a play on the lathe this weekend to see what I can come up with.
As you've suggested it's all about holding them and getting the thread on straight.
The images I've seen show them threaded all the way up to the head, is that what you've seen in reality?
