I can't help with your problem, unfortunately, Christy, but this information might help 796/1100 owners who want to lower their machines.
Although all three models share the same shock, the clevis that the top of the shock bolts to has a different part number for each model:
696 - 82919701A
796 - 82919631B
1100 - 82919631A
The 696 has the shortest clevis (sorry, Christy!), and the 1100 the longest as these pictures show.

I don't know the length if the 796 one - somewhere in between perhaps. But the upshot is, if you want to lower a 796/1100, you can fit a 696 clevis. I think the difference between the 696 and 1100 is about 11mm.
