It has been tig welded. Unfortunately it took two goes and the second time round the first welds cracked (almost invisible), my welder will sort it when I get some room to get the tank off again. It was a bit of a shame as he did a brilliant job of keeping the weld tidy and not burning the original paint
Not a fan of putty fixes, bit of a bodge if you ask me
