Thanks for the interest. I didn't realise how much this would strike a chord with everyone: I just thought it was me being over-sensitive! I, too, considered taking brackets from the master cylinders but since I'd done a similar job before, connecting the bar clamps to the screen, went about it as you see. I'm not sure whether to make the stays less obvious with a coat of satin black paint. At the moment, the brass is actually silver-plated: all part of the clockmaker's arsenal of techniques!
Just for interest, perching centrally above the clock binnacle is my high-intensity red LED turn-signal warning light. I've fabricated a similar installation on many bikes now, in the interests of having a reminder in a noticeable colour that can always be seen within my forward view. A single LED needs some simple circuitry to work from both turn signals. I have to admit that the S4R, at least, has an OEM idiot light that is much more visible than many bikes, but I do like my little red winker!
