That's exactly what it's meant to be!!! We all take it very seriously once out on the track, but we're all doing it for the enjoyment of it, and the reason we're racing 600 monsters and SSs is simply because we're on the whole new to racing, and to a man (and woman) Ducati enthusiasts through and through! It's also just about the cheapest form of motorcycle road racing you can do, it's entirely possible to get out onto the start line for £1500, including buying the bike, and be competitive. Other than the bike, all you need is a set of 1 piece leathers, decent boots and gloves (and helmet of course, but you'll have that already) and a race licence, which will cost you £90 including the compulsary ACU starter course. Then it's just race entries (around £110 - £120 a meeting) and fuel etc, and at one meeting a month it isn't going to bankrupt you or take over your life! I can honestly say I've had a fantastic time so far this year, and my riding has come on a lot as well!
