Yes, I've read that and the guy is recommending oils for his product but I've got some 90 gear oil on the shelf now - it is not 'very thick' although I am not saying don't use it on chains.
The numbers may be misleading - engine oil is SAE J300 and gear oil is SAE J306 so the numbers cannot be compared i.e. a 90 engine oil would be very thick.....although there isn't one as it would not be usable.
