Just get an oil filter socket, they're not expensive and very handy and you don't need a nut on the end to tighten or remove it. It uses the flats on the end of the filter and you can use it to tighten by hand and with a socket wrench to remove it if needed. Less messy than stabbing through it with a screwdriver too.
