I've just popped the sprocket cover off mine and there's about 2mm clearance between the chain side plates and the back of the slave cylinder.
I guess if the chain and/or gearbox sprocket is worn, any side play could allow the chain to skim the cylinder. Also, is the gearbox sprocket itself tight and the tab washer still in good condition?
