The ignition is a 'wasted spark' setup, firing every revolution (as the pickups are on the crankshaft) so connecting to the signal side of the coil will give you 1 pulse per revolution.
As for idling, I would think around 1,000 - 1,100rpm is about as low as would be comfortable.
