I am not sure about the DP filters on the later bikes- certainly the earlier models used K&N in the DP kit, or you cut the airbox using a template supplied if you just bought the K&N.
I would say however that if the filter you have (BMC?) is of the same design as a K&N then I would imagine their cleaning & re-oiling kit would do the trick. Where’s if it is a foam type similar to many ITG filters then I would search through a motocross supplier for a similar kit for foam filters as many MX bikes use them.
For reference, I run an open airbox with a K&N on my 1997 900 and cleaned that using their kit at a similar mileage to yours without really noticing any difference other than it looked clean.
