I'd rather have a bike with higher mileage that's been ridden and maintained regularly than an a totally mint bike that's been garaged for long periods and may have problems that haven't surfaced and been fixed.

A bike is only as fast as you open the throttle, you don't have to jam it all the way open everywhere (...do you?)
If your budget will stretch to a 796, it may save you selling a 696 next year if you decide you want a bit more go.
