Never used that method but there are many methods using weak acids - filling up with Coke has been mentioned. Thats very weak phosphoric acid. I've used phosphoric acid very successfully - its sold as bathroom descaler for loo's & showers. Dirtbusters is one brand - in 5L containers. Used it in steel tanks with hot water & a fish tank heater dropped in to keep it warm. The best I've used for quite bad rust in an old bike tank was with washing soda & an "old school" battery charger. Electrolytic removal really works well & washing soda is cheap & easily found. Lots on the net about it.
