What I mean is will 01 750 cans fit a 98 600? I'm guessing that the bore must be pretty much standard right?

Yep, all the aircooled bikes are the same.

Cans from an S4 won't fit though

Not sure if you mean the cans only, or header assembly too? The headers are not universal on 2 all valve monsters, due to various capacities having different height cylinders which effects the position of the exhaust outlet.

Also the collector turn-out (link pipes) to the cans are different on later (post Y2K)monsters, which means early cans don't fit. So if you fit high level cans like Sils, you need matching link pipes depending on what year your bike is.

Later factory issue cans are also longer by about 100mm, because they have an additional chamber to meet stricter noise regs.

...and standard 900 ss cans will give a midrange flatspot that Monster ones don't.
