Too much oil

I recently had my oil changed and today when i checked the oil level i saw it was quite above Max level. I am wondering if too much oil can damage the engine in any way. Anybody can help me here?

If I find too much oil I loosen the filter off just a fraction and run the engine for a minute, catching the dribble off the filter in a container. Much more precise than removing the sump plug and trying to replace it mid flow. Anyone got a better way? Obviously I don't drain it off at such a rate that the engine is starved of oil ...
