View Full Version : is grease the word?
This thread is regarding my chain, yawn. Basically i am currently lubing my chain with PJ1, which is fine. to clean my chain i use PJ1 lube remover. apply said remover and then pressure wash the chain to get all th junk off.
My question is, should i be greasing my chain as well or is lube enough?
I have been doing my lube thing for quite a few weeks now, can somebody in the know tell me if my chain is a bout to ping off or do some major damage.
Thank in advance

Don't pressure wash your chain! That will harm it more than not lubing it as you run the risk of losing the sealed in lube. Clean it with a cloth and brush and chain cleaner of course, lube it up and that's it. I tend to lube it after a wash but as soon as it's had it's first run do it again when the chain's warm so it draws the lube in as it cools.
Just keep it clean and lubed, should do the job. You'll also feel very good about yourself and have a sence of fulfilment after doing this as you look after your chain in a manual way. You wouldn't get that with a sc*****ler would you :D
so theres no need to grease as well as lube then?

nope if you apply grease it'll fling off after the first mile or so best use a dedicated chain wax or lube

I have always used diesel when i have wanted to give the chain a good clean. Works a treat.
Got the tip years ago when i started riding trail bikes where the chain gets covered in mud and all sorts of crud. Whip the chain off put in a bowl with diesel scrub around with the washing-up brush and re-fit...clean as a whistle.
Not practical to whip off a monster chain but diesel on a rag will do it.

Scotoiler.
Fit it.
Fill it.
Adjust it.
Forget it!
Works wonders and is well hidden. My mate got 18k miles out of his chain on a 900SS.

Scottoilers are great, if a little "sensible" for some! Since fitting mine (about 6-7000 miles ago I've adjusted the chain once. I did over 500 miles this weekend and the reservoir still had plenty of oil left in it, and I never have to worry about any kind of cleaning or lubing of my chain.
Aside from the fact that a Scottoiler will pay for itself by effectively doubling the life of a chain it pays huge dividends in massively reducing the hassle factor of keeping a chain in good condition.

Hi Dean,
I find the best way to clean my chain is with paraffin and a small stiff paint brush. The paraffin washes and lubes the chain at the same time, the gold chain on my blade looks as good as new and has only needed adjusting once in 4k miles.
I use a small piece of plywood to stop the slippery paraffin getting all over my rear tyre (the wood is used as a kind of shield).
After cleaning with the paraffin I then wipe the chain down with a rag and then apply Castrol Chain Wax (Ride magazine recommended - and very good stuff), later removing excess wax with a rag.
The paraffin is also great for degreasing other stuff, side stands etc, just don’t get it on your brakes or tyres.
Hope this helps
Chris :burnout:
