My rear brake has developed a lot of travel before biting. I think it probably just needs bleeding,
Today however it seems to be not releasing the brake properly and re-applying itself as I travel
'98 M600 25,000 miles, new pads 2,000 mile ago at service.
Could it be the hoses or the cylinder or should I just get it bled?

It sound as if the caliper is seized or starting to seize.
You need to take the caliper of the bike and strip it down.
It might just need a good clean up.

they aren't great on the rear, I've just put a goodridge line on mine to liven it up. although whether its worked I dont know as it's a pig to bleed and I'm being lazy. They do come off easily though, which you will need to do -for bleeding- if like mine it hangs upside down.

If the brake is binding I would do something about it fairly quickly. Binding brakes can overheat and lead to warped discs and wheel bearings losing their grease.

I had this and it turned out to be a warped disc due to a seized caliper. I never use the rear which is why it happened and why I only found out when it was MOT'd. New geniune disc was about £50 I think, plus you will have to strip and clean the piston of course..
