As a guide for this winter project i want to take the bike apart back to the frame to be painted/coated and was wondering how long on average it would take bearing in mind i am an engineer with mechanical background and are there any special tools i would need or any possible difficult bits that should be done with advanced notice.

To be honest I dont know.
But looking at the bike I reckon you could strip it in a easy.
I would recomend getting some help for helping you take the engine out etc.
I dont think it would be that hard a job.

Albie, the best people to ask would be Dom in Essex (M900Dom) as he's done this with his M900 recently, or maybe AK (via CK) of tricolor 900 special fame. They may also have some good recommendations on powder coaters etc.

Hi Fella,
Its not that difficult, you have to think about how you are going to do it though.
Paddock stand and a trolley jack is a minimum to support it in various states of Undress.
If you can get acces to a steam cleaner before you start it makes everything much nicer as you take it apart.
Get yourself some big plastic boxes before you start as well.
If you just want to do the Frame, then I would remove the front and rear ends as units, If you want to do what I have done then you have to strip the lot ;)
To get a Frame out will take about 3hours max, (I am assuming reasonably Competant Mechanic and decent tools)

If you want the same finish as on mine then Redditch Shotblasting (They do Mail order) cant be reccomended highly enough, and frame/swing arm in plain colour is about £60 +vat metallics slightly more, so very very reasonable prices too.
Link in one of the links above ;)
If you want any more info just ask
Cheers
Dom
