View Full Version : short near side by coil
your help please
I got my m600 (94) running jump starting it from my car ,
(the bikes battery is dead flat)
on removing the jump leads it stopped
tried it again, it blew a fuse (7.5 amp in the ignition slot)
on the lid though it is 15amp!! so i fitted a 15 amp one
started the bike. 'crack' a large short near the coil ?
not starting now
I have a weak spark on one plug but none on the other
have checked the coils out with a multimeter they seem ok?
cant see any damage, the n/s ignition control unit smells
so i swaped it over and have a week spark
so is it this unit? (cost £?)
can the unit blow like this?
any help from you will be a great help

Rich, what could have happened is:
when you disconnected the jump battery, the alternator couldnt keep up with the drain - so the engine died - and could have blown the fuse.
Never disconnect the jump battery, when bike battery is flat, cos you can get a massive surge from the alternator - like a spike to a computer.
This could have blown your ignition relay.
Check the relays?
I have coils & relays from a 98 M600 if you need some.

thanks for the advice , i was rushing and did not think.
not sure about the relays?
are the ignition relays the ('the ignition control units')
one per coil?
because one smells and how do i test them only have the old haynes manual!!
and yes i do need some bits to get me going.

The ignition relay is a small yellow box under your seat £5.99 about 1'' square, just pull it out and check it.
The ICU's are under your tank
stone me :(
what a prat i am

Just been talking to ruth and when we had our adventure with the ICU's the dealer asked if we had jump started the bike off a car, As it could cause the ICU's to blow.
PS no spark would indicate that the ICU has blown and it cant be repared as they are maintenance free, call a second hand parts place
All the ICU's from 600-750 supersports and M600 and M750 will fit your bike

Rich, very unlikely to be an ICU - as to my knowledge the M600 you have, has only relays.
Do a resistance check on the coils - if in doubt ask moto rapido (prob your nearset ducati people - Winchester) for help.
I have a coil pack with relays bolted to the side if you need it.

Alan it sounds like just what happened to us last week on Ruths 1994 M600 and it was the ICU's

J & R - But you didnt jump start your bike like Rich did.
Maybe yours was an ICU - which was known as a relay - one & the same.
A problem such as Rich has, could poss be what you say, but also could be one of several other things due to the sudden surge it had.
Alan.
Rich - have packed away all my wiring diagrams - if still urgent tomorrow, let me know - and I will persuade CK to let me find the box they should be in.
Thanks J & R for your replies and also thank you Alan for you thoughts.
The item is fully sealed and has a three pin plug and a two pin plug and is held on by a rubber strap.
Whether its an ICU or a relay I'm not sure, but I think we're on the right track.
The coils check out resistance wise and swopping the ICUs/relays gives a WEAK spark alternately. but one is 'dead'
I hope this makes sense.!! I would like to get her going
but I ride on a shoestring so to speak, so I need to whittle this down and eliminate things.
Will check this thread out tomorrow.
lots more comment please
many thanks to you all

Going by my personal experiences with faulty connectors to the Ignition Modules (which is what J+R call the ICU and rich is talking about) I would tend to go along with the theory of a blown module/ICU/smelly thing next to the coil. By swapping around the various connectors (for gawds sake, make a note of what goes where otherwise you'll be phoning around like an idiot, like I did...) you can eliminate the coils, the PICKUP coils, the Modules/ICU, and the plugs, you just got to work out how, cos I'm too tired to think! Alan's not a million miles away from you so why not borrow a part and see if it works fine? I got the sneeky feeling we are all talking about the same parts?
thanks for that
re--(started the bike. 'crack' a large short near the coil ?

still not shure where this short came from, i did see it though?
Alan.

Dont worry..Do you know any one with any of the following bikes
M600
M750
Supersport 600 or 750?
If so ask if you can try the ignition pod things (ICU's) from under your tank....try them in yours. Thats what ITALIA DUCATI did with mine. It started straight away and sounded great. Then they phoned around to get some of me from a second hand bike.
Our bike is fine now. They said it wa cause the battery wasnt earthed properly and it had come to the end of its life, the battery had gone flat and cause abit of a voltage surge and blew both ICU thingys
J&R thanks for that.
your idea is sound
any one in my neck of the woods that could help??
come on down
I have beer!!
thanks rich
Beer!!
Hopefully
this pic will clear things up
