I sussed the problem on the bike tonight at last. After a lengthy process of elimination, it was looking more and more like a break in the loom feeding the starter solenoid was the culprit. Tonight I found a split in the loom sheath, on the short spur feeding the R/H switchgear. On closer inspection the red and blue wire had snapped on a sharp bend (next to a cable tie) by the headlamp support bracket.
The cable had been really badly routed/tied at this point by the factory, with the loom bent sharply through 90 degrees, and I expect this led to eventual failure after 2 years/12000miles. Another brown wire feeding the kill switch was also nearly snapped at the same point, so it may be a good idea for anyone with a monster of similar vintage (2001) to have a gander at your bikes to see if a similar fault is waiting to happen.
At least the fix is dead simple and the bike shold now be ok for Arrow Mill :D
