My good friend Hutch of HTE Motorcycles has kindly given me the heads up to a very cheap Ducati he's got for sale. £750. Now Sold.

It's a 2006 1000DS Multistrada 35000 miles with logbook and two keys.
The sad part is the engine, which is buggered beyond repair. The front pot and head are missing, apparently they were destroyed along with the crank!

Nice project for someone with a spare engine, or even viable to break it for that money.
I was tempted myself, but I'm actually looking for a Monster in that condition for a project of my own.

Please PM me for Hutch's contact details.

If you got a DS engine already then it could be ok but I'm thinking worth more scrap tbh, sorry!

Having built bikes from 'cheap' beginnings only for them to run way over budget (my Monster for starters), I agree that it's probably too pricey as a starting point. By the time you've bought an engine and the, numerous other parts required, it'll end up likely costing more than a running bike IMHO.

Of course, if you've got a spare engine lying around then it might be viable? especially as it probably has most of the 'little' parts that end up costing so much. Not sure about breaking it, you may get your money back and then be stuck with lots of parts that no-one wants so, risky as above.

I have learnt the hard way (or have I, given my current project/moneypit?:o) that it's pretty much impossible to justify (financially) restoring/rebuilding bikes or cars, at least if you want to do a proper job and that you really should only do it because you want to.

That said, good luck with the sale.

Speaking as someone who is re-building a late model GPZ500S as an (almost retirement) project (don't ask I used to have one back in the 90's and they are cheap) I can echo the sentiments above.
Even though used parts are relatively cheap and I have one and a half bikes, parts prices and services have risen even with good quality pattern consumables so financially this makes no sense whatsoever but hopefully is therapeutic in the long run. I don't really have the space once it's all back together but it gives me something to do over the winter.

I went to see Hutch this afternoon.
You can all stop worrying about how much a 1000DS engine will cost or if would be worth breaking. Someone came 100 miles yesterday and bit his arm off for it.

I've said it before, but I wish folks would keep the comments positive when someone is trying to make a sale.

I do try to always be positive and help people out but at the same time be reaslistic. And imho that bike might have been a good buy for somebody ,(Bitza) if they had a spare DS motor spare otherwise it's a gamble bc the cost of an engine would make it unviable to restore. Breaking is always a gamble and with those the body is usually ditched and it's in silver not red. But it sounds like you found a buyer. So they obvuously either have one as a project or they have a good DS motor spare. I don't say scrap it lightly, you're talking to a guy who resurected a Lav 1200 Mirage in boxes, missing wheels and loads of other stuff so I like a challenge. They said it couldn't be done reasonably but yea £3600 later I got a nice bike. Posting for the layman here and sometimes you just gotta write things off, not a desirable model, not popular colour most part won't fit other bikes etc , etc. Still glad he got the sale, another one rescued?

I think people post their thoughts and ideas with good intentions, and that's the entire purpose of a discussion forum.
