Currently thinking of using early Monster speedo and Idiot lights cluster on a 900ss, but not sure if the speedo drive ratios from the front wheel mech are the same.

Can anyone advise ?

If they are the same - does anyone have an earlyish Monster speedo in good condition for sale ? BTW. I can't use the one off my 900ss as it's rear mounting bolts are set at an angle (i.e. not horizontally) so it doesn't sit correctly in the M900 cluster, otherwise I'd use it.

Not 100% certain but, I think the speedos are compatible as long as they are for the same size spindle? i.e. 17mm or 25mm.

Think they may have used the same wheels too, which would explain speedo compatibility.

TBH, I'd be surprised if they were different, especially given Ducati's track record on using parts bins for stuff....
If it the case that they're the same, and I've already got a M900 instrument case with idiot lights, then I just (possibly a big just) need to source a working early Monster speedo....

Same clock fitted to 750SS 900SS ST2 ST4 748 916 996 Monster 900 600 etc different part numbers because of the differing clock faces

Heres a new one bit of a bargain

You've linked to an SS speedo there Kato. and it's also a later one, which I think differs from the early type, certainly the dash surround does anyway.

Looking at that late type from the rear, you see that it is is held into it's mounting with 2 small studs with nuts. So, the "horizontal" mounts that you refer to Richard can be removed and leave just the instrument. I believe that it would then fit straight into a Monster dash/pod. However, I see that the cable drive input is angled on the (late) one pictured, without going to look I'm fairly sure the Monster is straight?

Always better to keep the original speedo as it retains the odometer reading.
Rev counter is also mechanical drive on the early ones of course, so needs the corresponding drive output on the horizontal head.
Later ones are electronic like the one pictured, no idea when they changed, probably about 1999 if I had to guess.

I've got 916 forks and the larger spindle going into my 900 so will have a spare Monster speedo drive for the original smaller diameter spindle. If you have the larger type going spare we could trade?

The 900ss spindle is 17mm which I think is the smaller of two....and the same as the Monster....

Just for information the early Carbie SS speedo is completely different to the monster one, it's even a different diameter, so they can't be easily swapped between housings even if the mounting holes could be re-drilled.
M900 - 84mm Body Dia, 95mm bezel
900SS - 80mm Body dia, 88mm Bezel

I've not got an SSie, ST type speedo to measure.

I have a couple of spare M900 speedos for sale, but both are missing the mounting lugs.
It's a common weak spot with them.

Nasher,
I tried fitting old 900ss clock into the Monster housing this afternoon and found out that the sizes are different.... :banghead:

Do you know if all Monster speedos have the same drive ratios as there are a number of later Monster speedos up for sale on fleabay (i.e. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125114563129)
It's a different part number to the one listed for the '94 M900 so guessing something must be different between the early ones and later ones (e.g. spindle size, drive unit etc.).

Also, am I right in thinking that replacement mounting lugs can still be bought from Ducati (part#70010421A) ? See https://www.bike-parts-ducati.com/ducati-motorcycle/Monster/1994/Monster_900/Monster-900/DASHBOARD/661/3402/0/661

If they are and can be fitted to one of your speedos, then we might be able to have a deal....

Other option that according to the above website, the UK version of speedometer is only £107 !!
