You may recall that last year I posted an item about removing scratches from my 1100 Evo dash.

http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=58896

Well, having successfully restored the display to as new condition, I was keen to prevent any new scratches appearing, so looked around for a screen protector. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be anything available for the 696/796/1100 - the usual goto people at Speedo Angels had something for all the subsequent Monsters, (including the new 2021 model), but nothing pre-2014.

Anyway, since I had bought a scrap dash panel on which to practice my scratch removal, I contacted Matt at Speedo Angels and asked him if he could make a protector for me if I sent him the dash panel as a template. He said it was no problem and the other day I received a pack containing five pairs of protectors together with an application kit.

The protectors themselves are a perfectly clear and flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), very similar to the 3M Ventureshield film that I have as paint protection on my tank. The method of application for the dash protector is the same as for the Ventureshield; spritz the dash, the protector and your fingers with a mild detergent solution, drop the protector on the dash, slide it into position and then squeegy out the moisture, (I also used cotton buds in the corners). Because the screen elements are quite recessed, access is limited and I removed the dash to make things easier - it only takes 10 minutes, or five if you don't have the nose fairing.

The result, an invisible protective film and no more scratches on the dash. This is what you get from Speedo Angels (difficult to photograph the film itself as it's so clear):

And this is what it looks like fitted:

i.e. you can't see it as it's invisible.

As with the Ventureshield, the key to a perfect finish is preparation. The surface must be completely clean and free from grease and dust, (which you achieve using the application kit).

I had wanted to try a matt, anti-reflective finish but, because the dash panel screens are recessed, the protectors had to be TPU rather than the hard glass protector that they use for the TFT screens. And, unfortunately, it's only the hard protector that can be supplied with a non-reflective finish. Still, it's no more reflective than standard and at least the dash is now protected.

Now that Matt has the template, he will be listing kits for the 696/796/1100 on the website in due course https://speedo-angels.com/product-category/ducati/ (If you use the discount code "Missenden", you'll get 20% off the listed price.)

Incidentally, I mentioned in the scratch removal thread that it wasn't possible to buy the dash faceplate separately from the entire dash. While that's still the case for the genuine Ducati article, I did stumble across this Chinese copy while I was searching for a dash protector.

It looks to be a pretty faithful copy of the original, (assuming that the photo is of an example of the product, of course), and is certainly cheaper than a new dash.

It always amazes me that these companies think it's worth going to the cost and effort of copying and tooling up to produce these parts for, what must be, a pretty limited market.

Good point, Rob, I'd not thought of that.

Ducati buy in the dash units from Digitek, an Italian company. So maybe Digitek themselves have their dash housings made in China, which would make sense.

I bought a screen protector for the TFT on my street RS, thought it was worth it for the small out lay to possibly save the screen from and accidental scratch.
