Re chroming fork tubes 821

Hi guys,

Anyone had any issues with rust dots at the bottom bit of the fork tubes?

I do keep my 821 outside as I don't have a garage but I wipe the tubes twice a day to make sure that no crap is on it.

Any advise on where to go and get them re done?
I'm based in essex close to lakeside shopping centre.

I always rub a bit of ACF 50 over the unused bottom part of the stanchion (or the top bit under the bottom yoke for RWU forks).

If you need them refinished, Brookes Suspension offer a rechroming service for £165 per pair.

They also do DLC and Ti-Nitride coating, which I considered when I had my forks worked on by K-tech, but the money ran out.:cry: Maybe at the next rebuild!

If the spots are outside the stroke of the sliders and merely cosmetic, can you remove them with some Scotchbrite, polish up with Autosol and then protect with ACF 50?

I found two tiny spots.

The reason why i asked for advice is because when I bought the bike it had this issue and I ended up buying a set of spare tubes but now these are developing the same issue so I thought that maybe is the quality of the chroming that made a difference.
I'll give it a try with the products you listed and get some research done on the actual chroming process.

The rusty dots are purely cosmetics now.

I second Luddite’s advice- if they’re not in the compression area going past the dust seal and you can catch them before the chrome starts to flake beyond any cleaning up I would just keep on top of cleaning and protecting the chrome after your initial remedial work.

I believe forks
are normally chromed over size and then ground down to the correct diameter which is why they should be done by a specialist and have a slightly different looking finish to cosmetic bright chrome.
