Something a bit special this Month.. Note that it's a Saturday this time and not on Sunday.
Breakfast at The Staithe 'n' Willow by the River in Horning. 10am Sat. 14th Sept
https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g1649080-d3365376-Reviews-Staithe_n_Willow_Horning-Horning_Norwich_Norfolk_East_Anglia_England.html

Parking is in front of the café on the Staithe by the river.

After breakfast we will nip just round the corner to Neatishead Radar Museum and try to pick up one of the excellent guided tours of the WW11 plotting rooms and/or the original and atmospheric Cold War operations room. There are also many other rooms in the Museum including the "Coltishal room" and the so called "Star Wars room" full of rockets of all sizes.

Even if the weather is pants, it's worth a car trip to this meet just see the Museum. ( Museum eta approx. 11.30am.)

It's a fair old way, but the radar museum sounds very interesting . I'm very tempted .

I don't think you will be disappointed by the museum, I've been a few times and see different things every time.
LousCannon rode over from Rutland a few years back, when we had a club visit and has often mentioned it since.
I think the fact that it all happened on that site and was SO secret at the time, that makes it so poignant.

I'd love to offer you a bed on Friday night, but I'm afraid it would only be the floor, which you're welcome to of course, but it aint much!

I'm in Peterborough, so if you fancy a bed for the night, then travelling with me to the cafe you are welcome.

I visited RAF Neatishead back when it was operational and had a tour, a very interesting place, there were some great stories regarding the effects of the massive amounts of power the antennas were capable of.

Had to move it to Saturday, as the Museum doesn't open on Sundays... Hope you can make it.

Parts are still operational and have an armed guard.

Please do tell the stories.. :mand:

The type 85 radar at Neatishead could put out 12,000,000 watts on full power, your microwave puts out 850 watts and look what that does to an egg

There is no active radar there any more, it is maintained because the circuits from from Trimingham go to Neatishead then on from there from what I understand.

Mjgt has the right idea, the radar was essentially a big open air directional microwave and was at times, according to the stories, more effective than a punt gun at removing local wildlife en mass.

There is no active radar there any more,

Don't believe everything they tell you. It's still a very secret frontline base.

When the Trimingham scanners became operational (known locally as the Golf ball), Lots of drivers reported their cars dying within the vicinity of the dome. It only effected certain models. This was about the time when ECUs were getting more common on cars and naturally the scanners got the blame for the cut outs.
The influence of the scanners on the cars was neither confirmed nor denied!!

Funny that a remote immobiliser for motorcycles was experimented with in recent years, that used microwaves. (As an alternative to a Stinger, which is inappropriate for a bike.)

P.S I didn't edit your post Oz.. I hit the wrong button.. Sorry.

Sorry guys, I won't be joining you. Got the chance of over time working Saturday. Not a million miles away as it happens. Dropping some glazing off in Ipswich.

What a pleasant morning was had chatting and dining at the riverside in the Sunshine.

Grumpy had a bit of bother getting there from Peterborough, but persevered and arrived in time for lunch to meet a very chilled out Dacs and myself.

The Radar Museum was excellent as always and the talks in the WW11 and Cold War rooms were spellbinding.

Sadly I had an engagement in the afternoon and had to leave before I had my fill of the all the sights, but no matter... The ticket lasts for 12 months. :mand: So we will return next year for another look.

Next month.. The Gin Trap, Ringstead.

Good weather for a 180 miles round trip, although, as Gazza mentioned, the start was testing!
Wheeled the 12r out of the garage.....wouldn't start, as in nothing. No turning over.
The bike went through the initial checks, but pushing the starter button had no effect! As if the button was not connected. Second time in a month this has happened, thought I had cured the issue.
So fitted the new battery to the 1200GS, and made my way to the meet point. What a lovely spot. By the river, on the Norfolk Broads. Great coffee. Spoilt by average service!
Then on to the museum. Fascinating.
Gary and I took in the talk on the development and use of radar during ww2, then a second about the cold war and how the based was involved. Well with visiting.
Looking forward to next weekend and the Ness.
