I have just got all the stuff back from the Powder coaters, except for the heads which will be done after the Port work;) :D

If this works I`ll take some shots of the Plating and Polished bits :D

Right then ....................

is the exhaust the standard Ducati one cos if it is I have some bad news for you, mine was polished to that standard and it lasted for about six weeks before it went dull again the Ducati stainless is crap and does not hold its shine.

Yep it is indeed;)
The trick is to keep polishing it, and then they go a nice Golden colour, its easy to keep once its been polished properly first, just a bugger to do from scratch:(
Thats why I paid john to do it:D :D

If it does dull down though, I`ll just take it back to him in 6 mths and get him to bring it back up again;)

Another good weekend in the garage.

Got all my New stainless capheads Taper turned !!

Fork lowers, engine cases, starter motor, oil cooler, rear shock.... all painted, headlamp shell prepped and priimed, Underside of tank primed.

Heads should be back with me this week, freshly ported, then off to the coaters for black crackle finish.

Still need to prep and prime Tank, Front Mudguard, tail cover, airbox.....
Then I can start getting it all back together!!

Dom,

Looking forward to seeing the final build - any clues as to the body colour, or are you keeping us guessing?

Do you think you'll have it all done in time for the Essex meet in June - or are you hoping to hit the road sooner?

You will have to wait for Colour and final details, I will be interested to hear peoples reactions when they do see it.

I do know it wont be to everyones taste, its one of those things you will either "Get it" or think

As for Completion....... Dont hold me to it, but the Monster weekender might be Do-able depending on whether everything comes together in time....

If not I might Bring it up as a "Trailer queen"..... the one and only time I can assure you !!!
It gets built, it gets ridden, might get dropped.... who knows, but it will go back to being my daily driver again thats for sure:D
More pics soon

Hi Albie,
Tank and body work you will have to wait for;)

As for the frame, dont mess about with painting it, Its really not worth it, get it Powder coated !!

Look at the Job Redditch did on my stuff, and then remember that for the job with out the barrells you were looking at £90ish + VAT Blasted and coated:eek:  :D

Not worth painting for that money ?
Frame and Swing arm was about £60 from memory in plain colour.

They do Mettalics and Candies as well...............

Nearly did an MV Senna Rep, gunmetal paintwork with Metallic Red frame and wheel centres when I saw their colour samples, superb ;)

Take a look at it when you see it, the quality of finish is as good as Paint ;)

Price is negotiable depending on Spec, but with all the Trick bits like the AP Racing brakes etc then you would be looking at £3750

Out of interest, what are you doing about your cans? I guess you putting the same ones back on but the downpipes - are you polishing them, coating them, having custom stainless made.
Be a shame to have such a sexy bike and stick some mucky standard downpipes under the engine.

Hmmmm, a meaning of the word stainless I was prviously unaware of, mine too lasted nigh on a month til it looked worse than most rat bike pipes, reckon the only answer is to plate them.
Im gonna see if the hard chroming (dull satin finish) they use on fork legs is any use on down pipes

You have to keep cleaning them and if your prepared to do that then the shine will stay.
They go a lovely Golden colour if you keep polishing them
But Heat + Road crap + leaving it will turn them very ****ty very quickly if you dont keep on top of it;)

I know what you mean Dom, but it still suggests to me that the grade of stainless is extremely poor. At worst a decent quality stainless will yellow and maybe darken at the heads but it shouldnt turn to a totally shagged corroded look after 4-6 weeks no matter what the conditions. The pipes on my old R90s were never polished, merely washed and they still looked good.
I dont know what Ducati have used but it certainly aint a 316 or a 305 grade which is what youd expect from a manufacturer of exotic superbikes.
Im gettin mine hard chromed:D

Hi Dom

Is this sort of service available all over the place? It's a long way from Birmingham and I have some polishing I need doing and don't have the time to do myself - including the GTS lump before it goes back in the frame.

Barrels are a Kind of Satin Finish, a very fine Crackle finish
Cases are 2Pack (2K)Etch Primer, 2k Highbuild Primer, 2k Black Pearl base coat and 2K clear laquer over the top ;)

Redditch did all the Powder coating (Including the Barrels) I did the Paintwork ;) :D
Including all the "Bodywork" as well (All in 2-Pack )

Redditch did a superb job on the Coating, and John did a great job on the polishing, hence the reason I am more than happy to reccomend them ;)

A big Thanks to John at Baines Racing who Reshimmed them for me at very short notice.
As the Valve seats had been recut with 3 angle seats, it meant the Valves sat further back in the head, I did not have the shims here so dropped them in at Baines on Tuesday morning and they were done by Tuesday evening, excellent service, and another one on the "Highly reccomended" list

I thought they were steel.
That's good news then as I can polish them myself.

Can I also ask the lug for the back brake caliper guide on the swingarm is it welded onto the arm or is it removable?
If it is removable is it screwed in or what?

The bike looks good by the way.
It is a shame you have to sell it.

Thanks.

Norrie.

Wont be a shame for whoever buys it......

For about £70 to polish the set I wouldnt bother doing it yourself, ask "How long would it take to earn £70" because I bet it will take you 2-3 times as long to polish them ;)

As for the Swingarm ?
Steel or Ally arm ?
Ally means its seperate, held in with an allen bolt
Steel I dont know ?

After seeing your nice polished footrest hangers, I finally decided to take the black painted ones off my '97 750 and do some thing about the nasty chipped and scratched things.

I don't know if these were originally black as standard from the factory or if the previous owner had them done, but they looked like ****e!

After some fine sand blasting at work and a bit of hand polishing they have come up terrific! Once installed back on the bike (now where did this washer and that spacer fit??) they are soooo much better. :D

Now I just have to find something to tidy up the original alloy cans which have several scratches and water-marks. Has anyone done a polishing exercise with these, or does everyone just fit replacement cans???

Hatter,
I'd be really interested if you find anything about polishing cans. FYI: I found a polishing supplier on the web. They don't do the American "Rouges" (?, powders n pastes to you and me) but they do a total restoration polishing kit. Seriously thinking about that. Then again, like Dom says consider how ong it takes and then how much your time would cost. If it's a big job I'd just farm it out. Anyone seen a polished engine block??

It is worth trying to polish yourself first.
I have polished a lot of stuff on my bike.
The only thing I farmed out was when I got my wheels polished all over as that was to much for me.
I can recommend G&L polishers they are good and not to expensive.

Paint is 2-Pack Black pearl on the cases, with 2K laquer

Barrells are black crackle finish Powder coat

Heads are Gloss black Epoxy Case paint

Pistons are not standard, they are JE 11:1 compression ratio pistons, Standard Bore but Higher compression. (Standard is 9:1)
They came from California Cycleworks, thanks to the excellent exchange rate ;) :D

Whats not too expensive?

It was £180 to get both wheels done.
There is a lot off work in them as they are rough cast.
If you e-mail them they will give you a quote or better still give them a phone.
What I done was e-mail them with a pic of the bike so he knows what he's dealing with.

Sorry Albie, but I have a strict closed season where the Monster's concerned these days. Usually runs from early November until mid to late February, or whenever there's plenty of salt/****e/ice around basically. Seen too many of my bikes desintergrate after winter use, or slide down the road on black ice to risk trashing this one.

I ride my bikes for fun nowadays - not just for the sake of proving a point.

Roll on the next track day :D

Any idea on your next track day? I am aiming for Cadwell next month and Rockingham in September. I would love to do Mallory again as I just felt I was beginning to get to grips with the place. Not eneough months in the year now. ****, I'm not an addict, it's just a cold ...
 I can handle it .....

Simon,

I too would love to have another go at Cadwell, having had 2 great trackdays there before on smaller non-monsters, but can't see it happening for me again this season. I've got a very full calender with NABD related stuff, and want to concentrate on attending some of the smaller regional UKMOC gatherings before the end of the Summer, rather than attempting to squeeze another track day in.

I just wanted to add, I had no Idea the bike had such an impact on so many people, so Thank you to everyone for the kind words in this and many other threads :o

I am happy its gone to a good home and is being used as it was always meant and built to be.....
But I do miss it ;)
Enjoy

This was one thread that I used to follow with the same anticipation I used to have on a Saturday afternoon when my 2000 AD was delivered. Now we've seen the end result and its bloody lovely. Inspirational that is. I'm loving the way you evenn got the sun sparkles on the pictures. Gush gush etc etc. Spike, you jammy bastard!

I saw this 'in the flesh' at Arrow Mill - got my vote for Best Monster ;)
(and not just me either...)

I just love the 'blackness' - Looks classy and cool

Seeing all this is tempting - just not yet. But when the engine starts to look a bit ratty (see Lost Again for deatils of haw to achieve that :D ), then re coating in black will be high on my list of options.

Rails are still on the bike Dom can't do with this cutting frames lark unless we are talking major changes to the bike. The rear rail left inplace makes it hard for the GATSO if the plate is at the correct angle, the link pipes will have to be removed and polished later in the year just to keep Mand on her toes.

Hi Gary And CK ;)

Do still recon a 900 Monster is the Ideal allround tool for me....

But I have been off 2 wheels for a while until this year when I bought another supermoto :spin:

I will build another Monster sometime soon, I want to find an early 900 to Build with a new 1100 aircooled motor and fully mappable injection :D

Just need to finish my 4 wheeled Supercharged toy first :D

So What have I missed then ;)

Not got a Monster at the moment but I am back on 2 wheels again so would be good to meet up with everyone again
