Hi all

Anyone know the speedo drive ratio for a mid 90's, carby M900/900SS?

Thanks

Managed to get 1/2hr in the garage today between all the stuff that needs doing around the garden before the weather sets in for the rest of the weekend.

I thought I'd establish exactly what was going on with the ratio on my 900SS mongrel I'm putting together because although the engine and frame are 900SS, a lot of the other components including the speedo drive and speedo itself are from a 1994 600SS donor bike I brought.

I put a piece of tape across the tyre tread and created a flag from another piece of tape on the end of the speedo cable.
I span the wheel for 10 turns and my youngest son counted the number of revs the speedo cable made.

We tried it 3 times and got the same result each time, and even swapped positions for the last attempt.

For every 10 turns of the front wheel the speedo cable made 18 revolutions.
Obviously I never rode the 600SS the parts came from, so I don't know if the speedo was accurate or if either the speedo or drive had ever been changed.

We thought we'd put my 1997 M900 to the same test, as I know the speedo on that is reasonably accurate, but it does have the later style speedo.
We were surprised that 10 turns of the front wheel gave 27 revs of the speedo cable.
Again we tried this 3 times and swapped positions for the last attempt.

It's surprising that with so many of the 90's carby bits being common between the Monsters and SSs the speedo drives and speedos are so different.

Didn't they switch from Veglia to Marelli or another make of speedo? That may account for the differences you found.
