Wasn't very popular model initially. The whole new model was viewed somewhat alien until the EVO drew people back.

They tend to be 'keepers' even though I wouldn't necessarily say rare.
With most recent Ducatis the base model is usually ~£1.5K less than an 'S'.
Even though the Ohlins stuff on a road-going S is relatively low spec. it always seems a no-brainer to me, if you can afford an S, go for it, you'll be hard pushed to find shock and forks upgrades at close to that price. The difference in adjustability and handling is quite dramatic based on the models I've tested.
