I just noticed that Lidl is offering a flexible inspection camera next Thursday 8th June for £40.

The cheapest alternative I've seen at Machine Mart is £70+.

Could be a useful addition to the tool box.

Ooooh ... a techno-tempter.
Maybe its time to pension off my dentist's mirror.

Using a mirror and a torch always messes with my head as I try to work out which way to adjust the angles.

I believe the correct medical name is endoscope, colonoscopy is the procedure. Endless uses and fun to be had. DIY Tracheoscopy anyone?

colonoscope

This would be more of a short sigmoidoscopy scope, the full scopes to drive round a whole colon are just a bit longer and thicker :) Size matters LOL

Shame you can't get reasonably priced mini scopes with steerable heads.

If you have a laptop there are similar USB versions available at a fraction of the cost (bigger screen too)

Well, there was one of these left in my local Lidl, so I decided to try it out (I'll probably never use it, but who can resist an extra gadget in the toolbox?!).

I'm very impressed with the quality; it's well designed and appears to be very sturdily made. It comes with some useful accessories too; two different hooks, a magnetic pick-up and a tiny dental-type mirror.

The display is clear (and colour) with adjustable brightness and a zoom feature. There's also a video out socket so you can view the image on a tv or laptop.

The camera is small enough to fit in the 12mm spark plug hole so I thought I'd try it in the combustion chamber. Four LEDs with eight brightness settings mean it's easy to get a clear view. I tried to take a picture on my phone of the display but it really doesn't do it justice.

On the actual screen, I could clearly see the piston crown, complete with light carbon deposits, and the honing marks on the cylinder walls. The crescent running top to bottom is one of the valve cutaways.

Fitting the little mirror allowed me to see the cylinder head with an open exhaust valve and closed inlet.

I was impressed. Pity I probably won't use it again!

They'll probably be back in Lidl in another six months or so, so if it's something you think would be useful, I'd certainly recommend it. Especially at £40 with a three year guarantee.

Oh, by the way, Darren, it clearly says in the instructions: "not to be inserted into any bodily orifices"(!) Sorry! :eyepopping:

I've got a USB version of this type of camera that plugs into a laptop and it is useful for checking things inside the engine but I wouldn't risk sticking it into the cylinder with the mirror attached - in case said mirror became detached in there because it would be tricky to fish it out afterwards...

The store I visited didn't have any but I did pick up a bumper box of dremel bits for £5.99.

Beware the grinding stone wheels, they are shi t at best, downright dangerous at worse! I went through the whole lot on a job recently and had to stick a genuine dremel one on which then worked faultlessly to the end of the job.

Couldn't resist getting one. Looks well made and works well, from personal experience if it does go wrong within the warranty period then Lidl have excellent customer service and will provide a replacement promptly, won't require the original to be returned to them and will sort it out within 7 days. Impressive service. I bought mine in the Wincanton branch today and they had another 6 in stock. Bargain!
