Stripped the carbs out of my old m600, there are hoses going to diamond shaped side pods, what is the purpose of these please

They are vents from the diaphragm chambers, I believe.
Can't say that I've studied the system closely tbh but nevertheless I've removed mine.
Its important to terminate the vent tubes in relatively still air somewhere though.
I re-routed mine so they now terminate behind the battery box.
And there are little coarse filter modules midway along the pipes somewhere. These are now the end pieces on my re-routed system (stops spiders crawling in ?).
The last thing you want, if you remove the pods, is to have the tubes facing forward into the airflow.

Oh, and if memory serves, there were also other vent or overflow pipes in there, but of lesser consequence .. which might be why my memory of them is vague. Filler cap vent pipe maybe ?

As Utopia has said, if you junk the boxes the ends of the pipes need to be in still air that isn't effected by any pressure changes on the move.
