Would anyone be interested in clear (as in transparent) replacement cam belt covers. I'm looking at manufacturing these, what are your thoughts.
See the state of your belts all the time and watch the whirry things going round

Hi,
SpareShack (http://www.spareshack.com) has these covers (part clear, see bellow).
My thought about them is will they get dirty from the inside? More cleaning !

These look great but £145.00 thats a lot of money I could make and sell something similar for about the £50/£60 mark

£50/£60

sonds very interesting!

I guess you mean plastic with a clear window in them?

mossleymonster
12-11-2002, 05:50 PM
No, all clear plastic, but slightly redesigned so as to avoid any copyright stuff

not yet still at the costing stage for this, also it's proving hard to find the right material that is heat, petrol and oil proof. But we'll get there

Are you starting a business or just branching out? Tell us more about yourself (or me at least cos I'm nosey) :p

I'd have a look at clear covers also, may be able to move a few on.

As for cleaning the inside of the Rizoma ones you can take the perspex window off without removing the whole aluminium casing.

Polycarbonate is pretty resistant to most things, they make bullet proof windows from it :D
Its also called Lexan (Trade name), they make R/C car bodies from it, by vaccuum forming, they have to be heat, Fuel and oil resistant :D

You could also do some really cool paint effects inside them !

How long do you think it will take to produce, 2 months, 1 year, 5 years...

Sounds a top idea from my dark spare room in wet Wales too - must be enough interest for a few R&D hours/dollars? Good luck.

Right chaps, well we've now got the prototype moulding tool made. So it's off to the vacuum formers, more head scratching and parting with money, running up and down the country with a piece of wood. Hopefully, we should have something resembling a cover in polycarbonate within the month, will keep you up to date. Cheers, Al.

Could'nt get pics in here so check the new thread

did you look into getting some colours in them like red, yellow, black waves or something ?

I have taken the liberty of merging the 2 threads...

We're not looking at colours yet, it's enough getting the things made at the moment. But, depending on interest once the mould and finishing processes are sorted then we'll have a look.

mossleymonster
07-12-2002, 01:36 PM
900 ones will follow shortly, when we have gauged the interest.
It's quite costly, so 600 and 750 seemed a good pace to begin
esp as i have a 750 lol

Sorry i know it's early stages but I just wanted to say I think smoked grey would be luurvely. Nice and dark and you'd still be able to see the belts do their thang! :D
Not that you're colouring them yet of course. :(

When you say it's very time consuming, I'm sure you're right but personally I'm still surprised at how quickly it's all coming about. In your mind when do you hope to have first production examples (even prototype) for sale. I was expecting mid/late next year, at this rate I'll ask for a set for my birthday???:D ;) :p

Looking good though, keep up the good work MM.

Quite fancy a set of these on my 900ie. I think PD's suggestion of some sort of tinted polycarbonate/perspex sounds the absolute dogs, and I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in coloured ones as well. I'll be watching the development of these with much interest

As PD says - keep up the good work

mossleymonster
08-12-2002, 09:43 AM
The first prototypes have to be clear, it's so we can check the state of the finish from the mould. Also, the plastics people say that bronze tint is really smoke etc etc etc, so until we know exactly which tints are good for the job, it's clear. Once we've got the aluminium tool and cnc trimming jigs made for full production we can then produce any amount of tint/clear in a run.

Next step 900s!! the process begins again :)

NattyBoy
08-12-2002, 10:42 AM

Any idea on what kind of price we would be looking at ?

mossleymonster
28-01-2003, 03:29 PM
Well finally, we have a prototype set of covers, one looks great and the other doesn't. Apparently the plastic was "damp" is what has caused the problem.

But they fit sort of, now it's fine tuning of the moulding tools and off we go (hopefully) they will be a light smoke tint in 3mm polycarbonate, the same stuff the new car headlamps are made of exceptionally strong petrol and oil proof etc.

As for price we can't say exactly but hopefully under £70
it depends on how much the next and final tool costs, also the cnc milling jig we have to have made.

Pics to follow shortly........................

24-02-2003, 11:04 AM
Hi all, well. We have had absolute nightmares with producing these things, but, there now seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

We have been assured by the moulding company that we'll have something worth looking at by the end of this week, not holding our breath tho lol.

Also, as regards fitment, these cover will fit from 98 ~2002

600, 620, 750, 820 no 900s yet sorry

So, hopefully we'll have some pictures and i will be fitting a set to my bike and will let let you know how i get on.

There's no point in us going outside again to get tools made,
no disrespect but we have already gone down the road before.

1 get toolmaker to make tool
2 send tool to moulder
3 moulder makes cover
4 cover comes to me
5 cover does not fit
6 send tool and ill fitting cover to toolmaker
7 argue the toss
8 toolmaker modifies tool
9 send tool back to moulder.................... do you want me to continue

Well chaps hers the sad news about the state of manufacturing in this wonderful country of ours.
In November 2002 I had the idea to produce these things, had a tool made and was recommended to a company called "Formold"
to carry out the moulding and cutting of said items.

To say that i am disappointed with there services or lack of is an understatement!! as of last week we have had to move the entire
process to another company and more or less start again :(

But on the plus side this company has a personal contact with someone i am now involved with on another venture so we are assured of a much better and more professional approach to our
needs. What else dare I say????

Watch this space:(

Hi all, the end of this saga is now looming. At great expense both in cash and clumps of hair, we now have a fully functional mould in shiny metal ( and we all know how much shiny metal costs lol)
pre production begins tomorrow 02/06/03 then it's about three days to make the cnc jig and program the cutting process into the machine. Hopefully by the end of the week we will have a finished product.

Next step guys, what are your thoughts on packaging, are you bothered ??

The tooling for 900 covers is now well underway, we expect to have a sample unit in about 2~3 weeks.

The 600~750 are going into production hopefully this week, we have increased the material thickness by 1 mm to overcome some shrinkage problems and now all should be well.

Also waiting for loctite to supply our stock of glue for the screws, should have been here last week.

Stuart at Spares shack should have his sample unit today, so we will get his feedback presently.

Now that the final version of the clear cambelt covers is under way, at least for the 600-800 engines (stock due in late next week) we are now taking orders and initially it will be a discounted club price of 85 quid inc vat and postage within the UK for orders placed this month.

We are also taking orders for the 900 version during the month of July at the same cost but delivery of these is a little way off
(August sometime). Any orders placed this month won't be charged for until stock is in and ready to go.

I have a set of prototype covers in my office if anyone wants to check them out but they don't really do the final version justice.

I will be putting them on the spareshack site tomorrow at the full price but any club member ordering through the site will get the extra discount providing they send me an email confirming they are in the club.

Alan (mossleymonster) has put an a hugh amount of time, effort and money in to getting these off the drawing board and I take my hat off to him as the final product looks great.

Cheers

This Post is 7 pages long and one of the most eagerly awaited products, done by one of our own;) has cost him a shed load of money........

MM,

I've had money with Stuart at spareshack for a set of covers since the spring. If the covers won't be available within a reasonable time, can you let me know and I'll put the cash to use on other bits I need for the 900.

Hi Gary, thanks for your faith and interest. sorry to say at the moment I can't tell when the 900 covers will be available, but as soon as they are I will give a shout and we'll sort a deal out for you.
Cheers, Al.

Right, people. As you may or may not know production of the 900 belt covers has stalled due to the amount of investment I have had to make on the 600/800 ones which don't appear to be that popular (my mistake)

The 900 cover prototype and all cnc jigs and programming for the cutting/drilling is complete, however I have run out of funds and the taxman has just had more than his share of my wellbeing.

So I need some help, here's the deal. If I can obtain 20 prepaid orders for 900 covers @ £50.00 that will give me the money I need to get the bloody things into production.

The only drawback for you lot is about a 5-6 week wait tops,
this is the only way at the moment I can think of getting on with the job.

So, if you want a set of 900 covers at half price let me know.

Here's hoping.

Regards, Alan.

As an addition I have just counted how many 600/800 sets I have and in order to do the above I will sell 20 sets of these at the same price of £50.00 this is all in inc postage.

Hi all, and an especial thanks to all that stood.

This is the end of the road, the reality. I made summat happen but no one wanted it, so it has ended.

There were 5 people out of all you lot stood up, so i cant justify carrying on i have spent countless hours and pounds doin this.

Not for greed but i have to admit to a feeling that it could have been a successful venture. However, it's not.

So, to all the people who paid up front and trusted me please accept my apologies and your cheques are winging their way back.
Sorry but no interest acrrued........... SOZ

And a very special thanks to Dom, HEY MAN THANKYOU !!

So thats about the size of it.

Best regards,
Al.
