Question about monster 1100 evo,is under steer when cornering a trait of the evo ,don't know if it's tyres or not,have a Pirelli rosso Diablo 2 on and wondered if it was this ..

Personaly I would say it was bike setup rather than tyres, if you have a suspension company that is near you l woud pop in for some advice or get them to set it up for you. The standard suspension is pretty dire :eek:.

As Chris says, check your suspension settings against those in the handbook. Check your tyre pressures too and tyre sizes/aspect ratios as all these things can have a big effect on handling.

I'm still running Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2s and have always found the handling to be pretty sharp, certainly more so than the classic Monster like my old S2R. I've certainly never had any problems with understeer.

One thing you could check easily is whether the forks are correctly positioned in the yokes. They should be as per this diagram...

and I've seen at least one example where the forks were too far through the yokes, which would slow down the steering.

Although I've now got an Öhlins shock and K-tech forks, that's more for ride quality as I've never had an issue with the actual handling, even on standard suspension.

I personally haven't ridden an Evo so do not know if it is a trait as such but I assume this isn't something that you have just recently started to feel?

Either way do the easy things first.

Check the tyres are in good condition with no noticeable squaring off of the rear and are at the recommended pressures.

Some bikes are more sensitive to these things than others and a front running a low pressure can make it feel rather slow steering which might manifest itself as understeer when riding at reasonable speed.

Of course as already mentioned check the suspension is at factory settings as per the manual (at least until you know what a base feeling is like) which may or may not be how the bike arrived from the previous owner or even the dealer (it certainly wasn't unknown for Ducatis to be all over the place a few years ago although I suspect quality control has improved somewhat).

Then go a little whizz around ideally on a route you can easily repeat as you make any changes to see if it feels any different.

Depends which way through... Dropping the yokes, or bringing the fork legs up through the yokes, would make the steering feel 'quicker', though ultimately less stable and possibly prone to tank slappers. Typically, people should only drop the yokes for the purposes of lowering the bike, in which case an appropriate adjustment should be made on the rear suspension too.

People shouldn't really muck about with geometry if they don't understand it. Bike manufacturers spend time on this stuff to get the best setup for the type of bike, and it's the reason that (generally speaking) yokes are not adjustable on production bikes.

Race teams put adjustable yokes etc. on their bikes to enable fine tuning of rake angles etc. but you'd like to think they know what they're doing...

To the OP - I would suggest you get your geo checked by a reputable suspension specialist!

Glad you sorted it. Had those tyres on my MV and never got on with them. Put pirelli angels on and it felt so much better. Not such a pointy profile.
