How about a little competition? Predict the 1,2,3 Moto GP finishing positions for 2017?
There may be a small prize for the winner. In the event of a tie, the earlier post wins.

On the basis of absolutely no knowledge or skill on my part:

1. Marquez
2. Vinales
3. Lorenzo

Gonna stick my neck out...and go for the long shot.
It's now or never for Rossi 10th world title... and Jorge on a Duke has to be feisty...
So..
1: Rossi
2: Lorenzo
3: Marquez

Highlights are on ITV4 the following Monday evening. The commentators are a pair of tosspots but at least you get to see most of the race.

Interesting. I'm a much bigger F1 fan than MGP but I refuse to give any money to Murdoch so stay with the BBC. I also prefer their coverage, mate gave me free Sky password but I never use it.

Anybody with eyes could see the reality of what happened to Rossi at the end of the 2015 season. Basically there were people (certain Spanish ones!) who didn't want him to win. It was all a bit unnecessary really.

:chuckle: And neither Lorenzo or Marquez play mind games? Rrrrrright...... :eyepopping:

Everyone in the sport acknowledges what happened, but unfortunately some people are so blinded by all their Rossi hate that they can't see what's going on right in front of their eyes.

Rossi is no saint, never has been, but Marquez' behaviour on track was blatant cheating. Oddly though, **** never sticks to Marquez for some reason? Could it be that he's Spanish perhaps (and so is Dorna, so is Carmelo Ezpeleta...)?

Rossi is constantly reminded of his dubious moments, and look at the likes of Ianone, and Simoncelli even, both practically ostracized because of their riding styles, yet Saint Marc can seemingly do whatever the fook he wants with no comeback or accountability? How does that work?

Still, all that apart, MotoGP is in pretty good shape after last year, where the racing did the talking, mostly.

Erm... Hailwood? Just saying...

No doubt Ago should be up there though, of course. For me though (and for many), given all his achievements, and the fact he's still winning races, Rossi is the current GOAT. It'll take one hell of a career to surpass his now.

Uncle Bob
01-02-2017, 04:18 PM
Kato - I'm not going to argue with you about not liking Rossi, that's your perogative, however 'overrated' and 'average'? Behave.

In some ways though, rightly or wrongly, Rossi IS bigger than the sport. Name one other rider in the paddock who would have fans, or who would be known for anything at all outside of MotoGP... He's a worldwide superstar, and that's why they say every race is a home race for Rossi and they don't say it about anyone else.

When he does eventually retire, MotoGP will be a little bit less interesting on track and off it, that's for sure.

As far as I know there are only two riders with nine world titles, usually when a there is a tie the winner would be whoever achieved the wins in the fastest time, so by that logic Mike Hailwood wins
MH 9 titles in 76 wins
VR 9 titles in 112
But that does not take Ago into account 15 titles in 122 wins so surely he is N01 ??

I would add Jarno Saarinen, and King Kenny to the list and put them both above rossi, only my opinion

Who was the most talented? Impossible to know because they rode in different eras on different bikes, with different rivals and when different talents mattered, so we need to look much deeper to understand the achievements of the greats, their performances according to the motorcycles they had beneath them and the rivals they had beside them, because merely counting race wins and world championships is never enough.

One IMO legend whos name I won't even mention, over one weekend raced in 5 different categories in all 7 rounds of each capacity; a weekend consisting of 35 races. Not only did he compete in all these categories at different engine capacities, won 32 out of the 35 races. There were five National titles to be won that weekend, He won all five, greatness indeed.

So I think calling Rossi the greatest just because he is currently the media favourite is a little short sighted.

Yes! Kato's obsession with hating Rossi is dull at it's best...

How interesting was it that lovely Iannone got the second highest times in the aggregated laps?? I think it's looking more like Maverick/Iannone for top spot going forward.

And in the celebrity stakes lovely Iannone seems to be taking up many column inches in the Italian press with his relationship with the slightly unfortunately named Belen Rodriquez (which Iannone cannot pronounce with his speech impediment) a TV and modelling personality, in the realms of the Abbie Clancy type. Something Rossi has never really been afflicted with...

So I revise my 1 2 3

1. Lovely Iannone
2. Vinales
3. Marquez

My final comment on the GOAT\Rossi thing... Read Mat Oxley in the March issue of Bike, where he talks about the future of MotoGP without Rossi. It's interesting stuff.

There are suggestions that the following of MotoGP will fall by 20 - 30% after he retires, such is his popularity, and that's a bad deal for sponsors etc. which potentially could mean less money for the sport. It's all speculation of course, but I'm not really in a position to dispute what Oxley is saying or where he gets his information from.

It takes more than wins to make somebody 'great'. And like it or not, nobody else's participation has ever had such a global imact on this sport, whether it's the number of titles, number of fans, popularity, economics, whatever. Can that be sensibly disputed?

Hmmm... Not sure I agree with that sentiment. I like Dani a lot, but it's like when you hear about all the kids at the school sports day getting prizes, when the reality is that some kids just aren't quite good enough to win (or there are others who are better, whichever way you look at it), or are maybe they're just a bit too fragile!

I mean, races, absolutely all day long, but if he had what it takes to win a championship he would have done it already.

I think if Dovi wins and MM comes 11th, then MM wins by 1 point.

If MM comes 12th, then tied, not sure how they work it out after that.

13th, Dovi would win by a point.

Maybe Rossi and Lorenzo will provide a rolling road block for Dovi?

There would be a kind of rough justice there, can't imagine The Doctor holding a grudge this long though.....(tee hee!)

It would make a change from Marquez trying to T bone people off the track at the last corner (Rossi in Assen, Dovi twice this year) in his usual win at all costs, if I can't win I'm not going to let you win, do or die last corner manoeuvre.

I'm expecting (hoping) Dovi to win it, followed by Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Vinales, Rossi (having put 93 in the gravel in a "racing incident") - that's how it finished in my Monday night dream anyway (following large amounts of Stella Artois)

However it goes, it's been one of the best seasons racing I've seen for a while, and it's brewing up to a fine ending next Sunday in Valencia - let's just hope for a classic race - enjoy

Monsieur Zarco is riding like a loose cannon at the moment..................

They all are. The style of MGP has changed in the last few years. Rossi said something like 'you have to ride like an idiot' after the last race.

Great spectacle and entertainment for us, until someone gets hurt!
