View Full Version : Another m900 Rebuild gets started

Hi all: I've talked about rebuilding my '93 m900 for long enough, so it's finally begun.

Starting with the back end, I'm taking bits off to check and clean them.

They'll go back on the frame after I've decided whether I can get a decent match for the frame paint [Any joy yet Albie?].

There isn't a show in Koln in 2017, they are every two years, so I'm not sure how best to celebrate 25 years of the Ducati Monster?

This one was first registered in Norfolk in June '93, so it shall be twenty five in 2018.

Looks good mate I'll follow this with interest as I'm doing mine after Christmas

Just got to find some where near me to build the thing though as I've got no garage but want to keep it local. ..

Ref the frame colour, speak to Trestan Finishing in Woolsten, Southampton. I'm lead to believe they have a good match

I am looking forward to this thread... I am going to learn stuff here I feel.

And of course.. great first shot. Wheelie bins are synonymous with Monster ownership...

Will follow with interest. Good luck!

No not as yet. That almost looks silver. Is that other hoop the same colour as the frame. Looks quite a job you have there. I hope you don't have the issues Spacemonkey had with engine bolts. See you have an analogue Gear Position Indicator :running::running::D;)

I've got a frame hoop I'm having matched by one of the best in the northwest next week, so will do some spray out cards, would be more than happy to send some out to see if it's a good match for you

What are you intending to paint? I've got a '94 rear suspension hoop off my other monster, but my local paint guys want a 4" square sample to scan. I don't think there's a flat surface that big on the whole frame.

I shall be very interested in your progress as I shall stick with the original frame paint (With its patina of rust, and oil and battery stains) rather than losing the original colour.

Thanks

Mark

I've had the frame of my monster blasted and I'm going to paint that, I'm a paint sprayer by trade so colour matching isn't an issue. The guys in your local paint shop probably wanted a sample that big so they could use a spectro (colour matching camera) on it. One of the suppliers I use should be able to match it by eye, I'm only using him to match it as I want it in solvent based paint, and we only use waterborne paint where I work. If he can't match it I'll match it myself and just paint it in waterborne.

I'm going to enjoy this thread rather a lot as I've been giving my '97 900 a bit of a gentle refresh over the last couple of years without taking it off the road for too long at a time. I am also pleased to hear you intend keeping the original paint if a convincing match can't be obtained.

Well if you can match it to the original colour and satin/matt finish I think you will be a very busy man indeed as no body else can seem to.

I look forward to the results and seeing the pictures.

My local paint shop said (very honestly of them) that they couldn't even match the wheel colour and finish on my 900.

I think it all goes back to the 'Cagiva' effect on the early bikes.

Very slow progress, but I have taken the wheels and footrest hangers to Griff's in Bristol for blasting and powder coating.

Still haven't decided about the frame though as I haven't seen a good colour match yet?

I have also now removed the exhaust, rear shock and swingarm for cleaning up, checking threads and bearings etc. then putting to one side for the rebuild.

The exhaust junction looks a little unusual: different from on my '94 Monster. I'm wondering if this is original. or whether it has been "improved" at some time over its first twenty one years?

Any thoughts?

Looks like someone has taken a very nicely made 2 into 2 system and welded in some chopped up cruciform pieces to connect them?

Hope this helps

Well today I feel I achieved something positive with the paint saga if and I say if in case and I always worry the sample original part sent to me by Darkness is the correct colour of the year. I believe it is and I got the part matched locally from an independent paint supplier who can custom mix rattle cans. We studied countless colour charts and was close with a Porsche one but we found a bike colour including ducati and cagiva and aprilia and got one very very close and he did a slight tint. He then took the sample suspension hoop and sprayed one side of a leg and it blended great. If you can notice it in the picture then well done. We also did part of the crap sample paint I did with Audi Dakota Grey so to check on that.
I am completely happy with it so I have 3 x 400ml cans to spray the frame over the powdercoat and have 2 cans of satin laquer.
It cost me £78 but I don't need a sprayer to do it.
If its successful and anyone decides they would be happy to get some please contact Kent Car Panel and Paint in Maidstone and they will be happy to make you some as they have all the details of the mix they did for me. Just say the custom 93 frame paint and its £12.95 +VAT per 400ml can.

From the comments about tyres on another thread here, I'm guessing that a date marking of 3805 and 1906 are getting a bit "Vintage" for road use, even if there's still half the tread left. :mand:

When you get your new tyres fitted tomorrow, get them to put some right angled valves in while they're at it.

Tomorrow: why so urgent?

The wheels aren't even fitted to the bike yet, so all I need is something to protect the rims until it's assembled and MOT'd.

The right angle valves may be a good idea in case I ever have to use a forecourt pump, but my 12v Michelin pump has a very small head to the hose and works well with the standard ones?

It's cooled off again today, so back into the garage to take some more off the frame to get it ready for blasting, powder coat and paint [Thanks Albie].

There was a paper ticket on the loom, but it's not very informative! Must have got wet once too often.

All I need to do to it now is clean off the worst of the filth, and drill off the ZDM plate from under the side cover.

Next thing is to clean up the engine and start cleaning and renewing parts re the rebuild.

Just had a message from Nick at Griff's: my frame has been blasted and primed so is ready for collection for the paint and lacquer to be applied.

That's prompted me to get on with sorting out which bits are going back on, and getting them cleaned.

I thought I had a choice of two swingarms, but closer inspection after cleaning them revealed a choice of one:

I'll be using this one.

Not this one.

The frame is blast cleaned and primed.
I got 0.5l of colour coat and satin lacquer from Kent Car Panel to get the right colour.

Mine is:

That was matched with the original paint exposed where the TA tag was removed. Do you have the colour constituents of yours Albie? It would be interesting to know what difference there is [If any]?

If it's for your m900ie, the paint codes aren't such a problem for the post '98 bikes:
http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/images/paint.jpg

These are a few of the paint codes with PPG & Lechler codes. (Borrowed from another forum post.

Glad you got a match though as the colour now isn't necessarily the same as when it left the factory.

Should be getting the frame back later this week: let's hope it's a good match........

In preparation I've started bolting some sub-assemblies back together

Having watched Albie's rebuild progressing, I'm now not so sure about some of the fasteners and plates: what had seemed like patina now looks shabby, so I think I may now be getting some yellow passivated zinc plating done too?

I got the engine onto a stand this afternoon so I can work on it without breaking my back.
An old 80's Habitat trolley table retrieved from the loft provided the tubes.

I don't know who has the copyright for these, but it works well.

Oil is out now, and belt covers off. Time to start cleaning it up for some fresh paint.

I am finding a plethora of elephants on the bits, and date stamps.

The block casting is October '92 but the belt covers are Feb '93. There has been some work done on it though as the front [Horizontal] cylinder head is a '94 casting?

What do youse guys recommend for keeping ****e out of the engine whilst painting and the cam, rocker and generator clutch covers are removed? News paper and masking tape?

I'm cleaning and inspecting parts taken from the '93 to see what can be cleaned, refinished and re-used, and what needs replacement.

I'm also finding plenty of dodgy engineering practise.

These are the spherical bearings at the swing arm end of the suspension wishbone. The one on the left is seized solid. The other one has about 1mm of free play up and down, despite someone's attempt to tighten the bronze lining with several blows from a punch.

New ones shall be ordered. :D

Given the Darkness example of spherical bearings prices, you would have to be an ex millionaire to buy that lot from Ducati!

Looking good as expected. Pm me your address for belt covers to be posted to you. Do you want some battery cables I got gifted. Not as good as Phil Matthews but sooner you had them if you can use them

Very little progress on the bikes recently, but have built a new workbench in the garage.

Pleased this evening to have bought another pair of unchamfered M900 silencers on eBay. :spin::spin:

Once they arrive here I shall see what I can do to refinish the pair with the worst scratches in the ally sleeves.

Ceramic coating looks interesting?

Let me know if/when you need those rose joint bushes machining (and dimensions).
The lathe is fairly regularly accessible these days now that (sob) the Norton's gone, so I can probably knock them up at short notice.

Thanks Jeff.

Another recent eBay purchase is a 10" length of titanium tube with 10mm OD and 6mm ID, so I need to check if that works. :spin:

Glad you got them exhausts. Good job I was sorted it would have gone mental. Had to keep that secret see quiet on here in case. Weirdly it was only days after I found my holy grail

No progress on the bike for months, as other things have taken priority.
Here are some before and after pictures of the frame paint, together with the paint details:

The paint colour was matched with the unweathered paint hiding behind the TA tag and I'm very pleased with it.

I might need some small parts from you in a few months time - will pm you when required ;)

Still not much progress on the rebuild, so in true Blue Peter style, here's one they made earlier:

https://s26.postimg.cc/6s76dh75l/IMG_0128.jpg (https://postimg.cc/image/rp3ei556d/)

Another K Reg, it's my fourth M900 [And I've still got three of them], each one older than the previous one purchased.

Needs new oil and belts, then I just need to ride it a bit rather than taking it apart!

Very nice. You will have quite a collection.

PS I see the rear exhaust fitting looks odd as in sticky outey. Just in case you not seen.

It does: looks like a previous has machined up a spacer from ally?

There are several other bits that aren't quite right at the moment, but first priority is to get it running and usable rather than stripping it down. Plenty of time for that later when I've got the other two running again.

It looks a great bike tbh. A bit jealous really. A K plate is awesome. That bike just wants loving and keeping right clean and rideable. I still not got bike lift space to remove heads on mine. Its going to happen soon but not had any time. XT500 has been waiting for me just to put oil in and petrol in tank for 3 weeks.
Im sure someones got a spare exhaust flange knocking around.

The new one is looking very tidy!! Have you managed to get out on it much since you picked it up?

For some reason I cant see most of the pic's in the thread.

Either shows Photobucket logo saying they're not available or they're just missing from the posts. I'll have to try with my laptop later.
