took off the creative wiring, unplugged everything. checked everything but the rectifier.
replaced battery. next morning was completely flat.
recharge battery. rode to work.started up no problem. rode home backfiring the last couple of miles.
rev counter intermittently working and fuel light half heartedly on (despite full tank). .
battery completely dead again.
got the hump and the train for three days.
rain finally stopped and started taking things apart today.

found the cause of the smoke. hopefully a swap out will fix the rest of the issues and then i'll load up the system again :)

anyone know what the difference is between the SH579B-11 with 0.7 underneath and the same with 0.9 underneath are ?
apart from 0.7 is now a toasty mess. :)

Hope all your electrical problems are over now, Ladybird.

I'm no electrical expert so this is just an (un)educated guess, but the figure of 0.7 is equal to the breakdown voltage/voltage drop of the type of diodes usually used in this kind of regulator. (The "breakdown voltage" is the voltage needed before the diode will allow current to flow through it.)

Perhaps the 0.9 regulator has slightly different diodes with a higher breakdown voltage?

As long as it works okay, that's the main thing!

Not sure if charging system is the same as the S4, if it is your 40A fuse is likely to have blown. Mine did in similar smoky circumstances:biggrin:

Eventually sorted with a new RR from electrexworld, also moved my RR under the seat so it is in flowing air instead of cooking under the seat.

Well then. I swapped out the RR and all was good. After a few days the Rev counter stopped working and the petrol light started to stay on, generally still behaving oddly.
I discovered that beeping the horn twice (first time produced no sound) seemed to reset something and the rev counter started to work again. Petrol light still emits a low glow all the time.
Obviously this is less of a problem just now seeing as I hit the deck. However, I'm probably going to need to look at this further.
Where do you start probing for (earthing?) issues?

My RR was already mounted on the front of the frame, roughly above the radiator.
I did observe some of the pics out there of melted seats!
